The amount of money that the United States spends on the military would surprise a lot of people. Most taxpaying citizens aren't aware, for instance, that their hard earned tax dollars are being used to pay for air conditioning in Afghanistan and Iraq. This is no small expense; the U.S. military paid out over 20 billion dollars last year alone on air conditioning. Another expenditure that would come as a surprise to most people is that 11 billion dollars is spent annually in Iraq.
The cost of keeping one soldier in Iraq for one year is enough to provide food for 60 families. The American taxpayer is responsible for footing the bill for 43 percent of the planet's military spending. If some of this money that the U.S. is spending on the military were instead put into health care, green energy or education, it would create a substantial number of jobs.
